The story

South of the great lake, the River Guadiana cuts a quiet gorge through the plains, and the best way in is by canoe. The water runs calm and deep between walls of golden rock, overhung with cork oaks, oleander and the calls of birds that few people ever reach. A guide leads each canoe down the slow current — no rapids, no rush — pausing under the cliffs where the water is clearest and, on the hot days, stopping for a swim in a bend of the river that belongs to no one but the herons. It is the Alentejo seen from a new angle: from the water, at the pace of the current.

The day

What you do

  1. 1Paddle a stable open canoe down a calm river between rocky gorge walls
  2. 2Drift under cliffs and cork oaks, spotting herons and other river birds
  3. 3Stop for a swim in the clearest bend of the river before the last reach downstream

Gentle on the land

The route follows the river's own current with no motors and no fixed installations, leaving the gorge exactly as the birds keep it.
