Castles, Villages and the Spanish Border
Spend an evening with a village cante group as they sing the two-voice polyphony UNESCO has listed as heritage of humanity — in the square where it was born.
The story
Cante Alentejano is the sound of the Alentejo: a voice leads, a second answers, and the whole group carries them together, slowly, without instruments, the way field workers sang to keep time in the montado long ago. On this evening, guests are received by a village group as friends rather than an audience — around a long table in the square or the group's own singing house, with the singing rising between courses of bread, olives and wine. Between songs, the singers tell what the verses mean: the absence of the one who left for Lisbon, the plains at dawn, the patience of this land. It is UNESCO-listed heritage, but here it simply feels like being asked to a neighbour's table.
The day
The evening is hosted by the village group itself, and the visit keeps this tradition alive in the place it belongs.
