The story

The Sado holds something rare on this coast: a community of bottlenose dolphins that lives inside the estuary all year round, born here, raised here, known here individually by the marine biologists who have followed them for decades. On this morning the trip goes out from the Tróia side in a small, quiet boat with a guide who can tell one dorsal fin from another: the route follows the deep channel between the sand banks and the golden marshes, and when the dolphins find the boat they come to it — bow-riding in the wake, surfacing in twos and threes, a calf keeping to its mother's side. There is no chasing and no crowding; the engine comes to idle and the boat becomes a rock in the current while the estuary's most famous residents decide how close to come. Between encounters there are the sand banks with their terns and oystercatchers, the castle across the water at Setúbal, and the guide's stories of how a dolphin calf is named. The boat returns along the Tróia sands with the water flat and bright, and the morning's photographs need no explaining.

The day

What you do

  1. 1Go out on a small, quiet boat from the Tróia side of the estuary with a guide who knows the resident dolphin families by name
  2. 2Watch the Sado's bottlenose dolphins bow-ride and surface around the boat — calves beside mothers, the engine at idle, no chasing and no crowding
  3. 3Read the rest of the estuary as you go: terns and oystercatchers on the sand banks, the marshes of Comporta, and the Serra da Arrábida across the water

Gentle on the land

The boat follows the estuary's dolphin-watching code — reduced speed, idle engines at encounters, strict distance and time limits — and supports the long-running research that keeps the resident community counted and protected.
