The story

The donkey is the oldest worker of the Alentejo, and for children — and honest adults — there is no better way to meet the montado than from its back. On this morning the family's donkeys come out of the stable calm and shaggy-eared, each one assigned to a rider by temperament, and the guide leads the string on foot along the sandy lanes of a whitewashed village: past houses the colour of bone with bougainvillea over the doors, through low stone walls and out among the cork oaks and golden fields beyond. The pace is exactly the pace of a child — slow enough that every dog at a gate, every cart track and every shade tree becomes a story — and the donkeys' plodding calm does the teaching: these are animals that have carried the harvest here for centuries and have never once hurried. There are stops to feed a carrot over a wall, to hear how the saddles and panniers were made, and at the end of the ride the donkeys are unsaddled and turned back to their pasture, and the family is left with the sound of small voices planning to come back.

The day

What you do

  1. 1Meet the family's donkeys, be matched to your own calm, sure-footed mount and learn to sit, steer and say hello
  2. 2Ride the sandy lanes of a whitewashed village and the paths beyond it — stone walls, cork oaks, dogs at gates and fields of gold
  3. 3Feed the donkeys their carrot at the end, watch them turned back to pasture and hear the story of the working animal of the Alentejo

Gentle on the land

The ride keeps to existing village lanes and estate tracks at walking pace, the donkeys work short family mornings with long pasture hours, and their welfare and rest days are set by the family who has kept them for generations.
