The story

Europe's largest artificial lake is also one of its quietest fishing grounds. On this morning, guests take to the Alqueva's northern arms with a local guide who has fished these waters since the valley was flooded — glassy water between golden hills and island shores, herons on the rocks, and no engine noise but the boat's own. He knows where the black bass hold under the oaks and where the carp cruise the shallows at first light, and he reads the lake the way a shepherd reads the plains: by the wind, the light and the birds. Between casts he tells how the old riverside villages watched their valley fill with water and become a lake with more than a thousand kilometres of shoreline. Guests fish from the boat or from a rocky point as the sun climbs, and the morning ends with coffee on the shore — perhaps a clean, cold lake perch cooked the way the fishermen do it, or simply the water turning silver and still. Guests keep what the seasons allow, or release everything: the lake gives the choice.

The day

What you do

  1. 1Fish the lake's quiet arms from the boat and the shore with rods, bait and local knowledge
  2. 2Learn how the valley became the lake, and where the fish hold under cork oaks and islands
  3. 3End on the shore with coffee as the water turns silver — keep the day's fish or release them all

Gentle on the land

Fishing follows the lake's own rules — licensed guide, seasonal limits, and catch-and-release on request so the lake stays as rich as it is today.
