The story

The montado looks wild, but it is a garden that took centuries to plant. On this half day, guests ride an open jeep along the estate tracks that wind between the cork oaks, with a naturalist guide at the wheel and the whole plain unfolding at walking speed. He stops where the land tells a story: a herd of free-range Iberian pigs rooting for acorns under the oaks, honey-coloured Alentejana cattle resting in the shade, an eagle's platform on the far hill, a stand of oaks stripped of cork still healing. Between stops he explains how the system works — trees, animals and people feeding one another for eight hundred years, one of Europe's oldest sustainable landscapes and one of its most endangered. Guests ride on the open benches as the light moves across the grass, walk short stretches of track where jeeps do not go, and end at a miradouro over the lake or the plains with a drink while the guide answers the question he is asked most: how is it possible that this almost disappeared?
