Stone, Roman and Megalithic Heritage
Stand at the edge of the open quarries where Portugal's finest marble has been cut since Roman times.
The story
Between Estremoz, Borba and Vila Viçosa lies the heart of Portugal's marble country. The quarries open into the land in great white terraces, and the stone they give has paved palaces, churches and village doorsteps for two thousand years. With a local guide you see how a block is cut from the face, moved and shaped, then follow the stone into the workshops and the towns that were built from it.
The day
Visits are arranged with local quarry families and artisans, and follow their safety rules on site.
