Stone, Roman and Megalithic Heritage
The marble seat of the House of Braganza, the last royal family of Portugal, with its great square and quiet rooms.
The story
For centuries the Dukes of Braganza lived here, and from this family came the kings of Portugal. The long facade of local marble faces a wide square where King João IV rides in bronze. Inside, the rooms keep tiles, tapestries, painted ceilings and the private apartments of the last kings, as if the household had only just stepped out. Around it, Vila Viçosa is a calm town of marble doorsteps, orange trees and convents.
The day
A heritage visit that sustains the palace foundation and the small restaurants of the town.
